Volunteer Spotlight: Phlebotomist Sarah McKenna
Volunteers founded Culmore Clinic in 2007 and to this day it is still significantly volunteer run. Regularly we like to spotlight volunteers who support the Culmore Clinic mission and ensure continuous quality, culturally sensitive healthcare at little to no cost to our uninsured patients.
This month we’re featuring Volunteer Phlebotomist Sarah McKenna. Sarah found out about us on her church’s (Blessed Sacrament) bulletin and we’re so glad she did! Learn more about her and her journey to Culmore Clinic below.
What do you do at Culmore Clinic and for how long?
I've worked as a phlebotomist since late August.
How did you find out about Culmore Clinic and decide you wanted to volunteer?
After I finished my phlebotomy certification I found out about the clinic from an advert in a church bulletin. I thought that the organization looked like it was doing a lot of good and wanted to use my skills to help.
Where did you train?
While at Alexandria High School I was in a dual-enrolled program with George Washington University. I went through the laboratory technology pathway and I got my phlebotomy certification.
What's your favorite thing about working at Culmore Clinic?
I like helping out, it is a wonderful clinic. I like to help patients get the tests they need.
When you're not working and volunteering at Culmore Clinic, how do you spend your time?
I'm working on my undergraduate degree, but in my free time, I love to paint and draw. I mainly use watercolors.

Come meet Sarah sometime on a tour of The Clinic or by volunteering yourself. Learn more about Volunteer Opportunities here and reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator, Jokabeth, if you have any questions!
